February 4, 2022 - Flying the Champ Solo, Over a Swamp! |
||||||
Bruce and I were out at New Hibiscus Airport today, flying his Champ. Bruce wanted to practice flying from the back seat with me in the front as a passenger. Here we are on final for runway 18. |
||||||
Then I flew the Champ solo for awhile, making three landings and flying around the local area.
Northwest of the airport was the marshy area that was really beautiful from 500 feet. Bruce had the passenger door off so you could really see it. The pictures came out great.
I couldn't take the pictures flying solo because the Champ is not a hands-off airplane, but later Bruce flew the plane from the back and I took the following pictures.

Some dry solid land next to the marsh: cattle country!

At one point I saw four men wearing hunter orange vests wading throught the water. I don't know what they were hunting; maybe looking for pythons?

A circular sink of some sort? With a hammock in the center. I wonder what made all those tracks? Jeeps or trucks in drier weather?
Cows walking the trail.
Back at New Hibiscus, we talked to this guy who has yet to fly his brightly colored ultralight. This would be a fun plane to fly around here. (Two months later) Bruce told me the plane was busted up in a ground loop on the first attempted flight. Fortunately the pilot wasn't hurt. |
